In most of the areas of the world we have all been in self isolation for over forty days! I cannot wait till we can all be together again and talk in person. One thing I am sure we will all ask each other is what did you do during quarantine. There will be various answers filled with all different activities. But maybe instead of asking about what they did, how about asking w
hat they learned?
For me this has been a time of reflecting on change. Change is not something you deal with overnight. You must learn how to adapt even if you forced into the change. How does this relate to us spiritually? We must learn how to change our worldly ways into God’s ways. In other words, we must adapt to the changes of living by God’s law. Not only should we change our physical actions but our hearts. 2 Peter 3:9 says this, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead his patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” God will wait patiently for you to change!
While we change, we can rest assured in some of the promises God makes to us. Deuteronomy 3:16 is one of my favorite verses, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you, he will never leave you nor forsake you.” We can have faith that knowing no one can hurt us as we change the details about our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says this, “For I know the plans I have for you”, declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Everything God will do for us overtime is for our benefit. Maybe this pandemic did make life a little harder, but it has given us all the time we need to reflect on our lives physically and spiritually.
Numbers 23:9 states this, “God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” God will not lie to us so when he says that he will wait patiently for us to change he means us. He wants YOU to come to repentance. He wants everyone to come to repentance. God will always act on his promises and keep them. We can see this after the world is flooded, and God promises Noah something. Genesis 9:11-13 God speaks this to Noah and his sons, “I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood. The rainbow that I put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever.” Whenever we see a big dazzling rainbow in the sky, that is God’s reminder that he sticks to his word, always and forever!
I am sure everyone has heard the old tale of the tortoise and the hare. The hare was making fun of the tortoise for being so slow, so the tortoise decided to race him to prove that he gets to a place fast. After running for a while, the hare, instead of acting, let the tortoise run ahead while he lay and take a nap. All along the tortoise kept going slow but steadily, and soon passed the hare! But the hare slept peacefully while tortoise passed by and he was extremely near the goal. The hare tried as hard as he could to speed up, but it was too late.
The main moral of this story is by doing things slowly and steadily can be more successful than by acting quickly and carelessly. In order to live God’s way, we must pay attention to every little detail he has laid out for us. Every commandment, promise, law should be something that we learn over time and follow with care. If we quickly decide to change our whole way of thinking we will miss important details that we need to know for us to live his way of life. 1 John 2:17 “The world and its desires pass away but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” We must put all our focus on to God’s details instead of the worlds! Remember slow and steady always wins the race!
