How did God design Marriage?

What do you know about marriage? Is it something that you hope for in your life or something that seems so out of reach? For me marriage is a special decision one makes when they are in a committed relationship with somebody they can see forever with. Somebody that is faithful to them and God. Merriam Webster dictionary defines marriage as, "the state of being united as spouses in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law." But God sees marriage very differently.

God Created Marriage not by Accident, but on Purpose.

In the beginning of human life God created Adam. Adam lived in the beautiful garden of Eden with animals of every nature around him. He was presented with the task of naming all the animals. All of these animals were in pairs, with there mates. But, Adam was all alone in the beautiful world God had created for man. Genesis 1:18, "It is not good that man to be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him." God created the perfect complement to man, woman!

What did Jesus Christ tell the People!

In Matthew 19:4-6 he says, "A man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. And the two shall become one flesh." In other words, when a man and a women are married they become one unit working to complete life. Galatians 5:19 Paul reminds Christians of the command to avoid adultery and fornication. "The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;"

Should Marriages be Long-Lasting?

In older ceremonies (and some modern ceremonies) the couples would say the phrase at the end of the vows, "till death do us part." It meant the only thing that would put an end to the unity of the couple was the death of either partner. God has some exceptions for leaving a partner. But, that's why it is so important to find a person that will be good to the Lord and you forever and always.

What does the Bible Teach about Marriage?

  1. God designed marriage to be lifelong, faithful relationship between one man and one women.

  2. God created the perfect pair for Adam.

  3. Due to sin, polygamy and divorce entered. Christ said divorce was only allowed in Israel because of their hardness of heart.

  4. While God does provide provisions for a marriage to dissolve it is an extremely painful experience. God does not want his children to hurt one another in such a matter.

  5. Jesus Christ and his apostles saw marriage of loving, monogamous relationship between one man and one woman.

Are Men better than Women?

God designed men and women to be different but to compliment each other. Men have different strengths then women, and vice versa. They were made for different purposes. But both should be respected equally.

How to know if your significant other is right for a marriage

Look for the right Godly qualities in that person. Do they show the fruits of the spirit with their actions and words? Are they committed? Do they put God first always? Do they respect you?

Does the relationship end with marriage or a breakup? When you imagine your life in the future do you see a problem with your significant other or that they are loyal forever? One way you can see the answer to this question is by watching their actions and listening to them talking about the future. If your significant other has never mentioned you in their future then they probably are not ready for that next step. If they get jealous or hateful easily this could be a red flag that that person is not mature enough for a lasting relationship.

Can you picture your life with that person? Would it be easy or hard for you all to have a life together? Whether that's a yes or no the only way to truly know is to find out how you make your relationship work in the beginning. Are you the only one trying to make it work, or do you both try and figure it out.

Point to Ponder:

Just remember that God designed marriage for our benefit not as a disadvantage. It may take time to find the right person but I truly believe God has somebody for everyone. But you have to pray and wait for God's perfect timing. A key to remember: when in doubt, pray it out!
